Editorial – September 2014

Dear Colleagues,

This is an exciting time at CERN, with the accelerator chain starting up again after the long shutdown. Although the LHC will not be ready for data taking until next Spring, the rest of the broad program of physics is coming back to life. In particular, the facilities for nuclear physics study that use beam from the PS, ISOLDE and nTOF, have started up again, and for this edition of the newsletter we have articles on each of them.

A big experiment, NA62 at the SPS, has seen beam for the first time on October 6, for a technical run with an almost complete detector configuration, which will be covered in detail in the next issue.

There is also an extensive test beam program underway, for which you can also find the details of a number of studies, including the successful outreach exercise for students from schools, who were enthusiastic about their time here. I wish you pleasant reading.
