Xmas wishes FCC

Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends,

2016 has been an exciting year that in many respects exceeded our expectations.

Significant progress has been made since the FCC kick-off meeting, held in Geneva in 2014.

Today’s outstanding questions in fundamental physics can only be successfully addressed through the variety of approaches the field has developed over the years, emphasizing the importance of accelerators as exploratory instruments.
Building a larger and more powerful collider requires sufficient lead time and sets a number of challenges related to the physics and accelerator parameters, but also to the operation of such a machine. The FCC study is not merely looking to a scaled-up version of the LHC but to a new large-scale research infrastructure to open new horizons in our quest to understand nature within the 21st century. Given the size and complexity of such a project, we need to boost the efficiency of present technologies well beyond the current state of the art.

For the 2017 FCC Week in Berlin, the FCC collaboration will consolidate the baseline designs for collider and infrastructures as a reference for preparing the Conceptual Design Report. New year will start with the first FCC physics workshop at CERN, bringing together theoretical and experimental physicists to discuss the opportunities that such a large-scale research infrastructure will open.

Building a truly global collaboration is of paramount importance for the success of our vision. Today FCC brings together 96 institutes from 29 countries and looks forward to keep the growth rate in the next years. New ideas, vigorous technological developments as well as worldwide collaboration are needed to realise a future circular collider.
